Title tags are an important part of on-page SEO. They enable the search engines to decide which keywords your site wants to shout loudest about. They should therefore never be abused or your site could get penalised.
Examples of different tags for the un-initiated:
H1 Tag
H2 Tag
H3 Tag
H4 Tag
H5 Tag
The bigger the tag - the more importance you place on it and therefore so do the search engines - hence making your main keyword an H1 is important. They have limited opportunity for use on any page, that is to say, you should not over use them so getting the balance right is important. Getting your title tags right is pretty important as it is a big factor in helping the main search engines rank your pages. Below is some advice that applies to all websites so if you find you are lacking in any of these points, you may want to do a review and plan some changes. Beware though, do not change any pages that currently rank well or you may lose them
Best Practice Use of Title Tags:
1) Limit length to 70 characters: (including spaces) you can add more in, but do not over do it - maximum of 120 if it is well written and sensible (do not keyword-stuff).
2) Include your main page keyword phrases: but only once, do not over use your keyword or you could get penalised for keyword stuffing.
3) Target longer phrases if they're relevant and pull traffic: It is easier to get traffic for "Lanscape Gardeners in Hampshire" than "Lanscape Gardeners"
4) You can use a divider: If you need to split up your phrases, it makes it easier for the reader so therefore good to use a divider.

5) Focus on clickthrough & conversion rates: Make your title tag as appealing as you would a pay per lcikc as on Google. The title tag is exceptionally similar to the title you might write for paid search ads, only it's harder to measure and improve because the stats aren't provided for you as easily. It can make a huge difference in the long run. A word of warning, though - be wary that you don't focus entirely on CTR.
6) Target the searchers intent: When you're writing titles for web pages, keep in mind the search terms your audience employed to reach your site.
7) Repeat in the headline: Re-using the title tag of each page as the H1 header tag can be valuable from both a keyword targeting standpoint and a user experience improvement.
